NCT and CVRT and the driving test, 2022

October 16th, 2022

Update: The RSA are no longer allowing this NCT exception. You do need a valid NCT for the Driving Test.

“Dear ADI,
Please note that we have been informed by Driver testing that with immediate effect all cars presenting for a driving test must have a valid NCT disc.
All customers that are scheduled for a driving test this week have been contacted via text to advise them to present for their driving test in a vehicle with a valid NCT.
Apologies for any inconvenience, this is out of our control.
Regards, Driver Education.”

NCT

The NCT is obligatory for all cars four years old and over. From 1st July 2022, all privately taxed Category B vehicles registered on or before 30th June 2018 (up to and including 181-reg) should have been tested. As a result, all such vehicles should have a valid NCT for the driving test.

EXCEPTION; Effective immediately. Due to current delays at the NCT, if an NCT disc is not on display and where the applicant can produce evidence of an NCT test appointment, and where the NCT test due date is no more than three (3) months prior to the driving test appointment, the test should be conducted.

An email, letter or text confirming the registration number of the car and booking number is acceptable proof of upcoming NCT appointment.

Testers can check at the NCT ‘Test Due Date’ button on www.ncts.ie

CVRT

Vehicles liable to the CVRT (i.e. taxed commercial) must display a CRW disc once they are a year old or more. As a result, all such vehicles, including car-type vans that are liable to CVRT, registered on or before 30th June 2021 (up to and including 211-reg) should have a valid CRW disc on display. If such a disc is not on display, the driving test should not be conducted in that vehicle.

Remember to get pre test driving lessons before your driving test.
