Motorway Driving Lessons
November 30th, 2023
Motorway driving lessons can be given by Allied Driving Instructors in many parts of the country. Once you have a full licence, our local driving schools can help.
You can not legally drive on motorways until you have a full licence. But then you could legally drive on the M50 in rush hour. Also you could take hours long of a journey at 120 KMH to Cork or Belfast. As well as that you could take a holiday and drive in foreign countries on their motorways too. But this would not be the wisest move. While motorways are statistically safe, while everyone travels in the same direction with a big central median. The really dangerous bits are the speeds involved, filtering on and off.
So what do you need to do to make this step up to motorways a safe one?
Build up to the biggest, fastest, busiest roads. Practice on good, big national roads. These can have speed limits up to 100 KMH. Take a driving lesson for your first time on a motorway. We can guide you on what to do in the most basic and the most difficult situations. As with many new driving situations, we can be a second set of eyes. When you start driving on motorways by yourself, prepare your route. Know where you are going and how to get there. In addition to this use Sat Nav as a backup.
The left lane is the driving lane. Lanes further to the right are for overtaking. Lanes further to the left of the thicker, broken white lines are filter lanes for coming on and off the motorway. Stay two seconds back from the vehicle in front. Double this to four seconds when it is wet. When it comes to changing lanes, observation is massively important; lots of use of the mirrors while still looking well ahead. But also a 90′ check.
