How much does it cost to get a driving licence?
Short answer: It costs €35 / €55 to get a driving licence in Ireland.
Longer answer: Approx €3,000.
OK, I’ll explain.
The first answer is €35 which is the cost of a learner permit / provisional licence. To get or renew a full licence the cost is €55.
Before you can get your learner permit you will need to study for the theory test which could cost €13. Then the theory test itself costs €45. Be careful of false sites charging more. The links from this site are safe or go to the RSA or theorytest.ie. Once you have pass you will need to get a basic eyesight report which cost about €20. Then you can get your learner permit which again costs €35. So at this point we are up to €113. Here’s where things get complicated.
You will need to do twelve hours of EDT lessons as a minimum. These can cost anything from €395 to €499 and you will likely need more lessons closer to your test. It is recommended and very likely that you will need to get insured in a car. This could cost thousands and is dependent on many factors like age and the power of the car you are getting insured in. Of these you may be able to control the cost relating to the car you will use. Smaller engines in cars that are less than ten years old will cost less. You may also need to add the cost of buying, taxing and running a car of your own.
The final set of costs are the driving test itself, which costs €85. Again be careful of false sites charging more. Don’t forget your pretest lessons. But once you have passed it’s to the NDLS again to get your full licence for €55, which will last you ten years.
