How many lessons does it take to learn to drive?
This is a common question we get asked. But asking how many lessons does it take to learn to drive, is like asking, ‘How long is a piece of string?’
I’ve given driving lessons to some people ( before the EDT requirement for 12 hours of lesson ) that did ten hours of lessons and passed their driving tests. Now, these were often the type of people who excel at everything. Fortunately they were all nice people. Otherwise it would have been very annoying to a mere mortals like myself.
Intelligence does not mean driving ability. I’ve given lessons to doctors, barristers and physicists who are very used to passing every test they sit. But learning to drive is more of a challenge for them. Some people take a massive amount of lessons. Slowly, steadily edging their way closer to passing the test. No rush an no pressure. For some it is simply the stress of driving that holds them back. Often, some accident in their past is playing on their mind. Only when these people get over their worst fears do they really start to improve drastically.
If you ask the RSA how many lessons does it take to learn to drive, they will give their plan of 12 hours of lessons combined with 36 hours of practice. In other countries it can be a lot more. If you have the opportunity to drive another car this will usually be enough. But not every has access to another car or can afford the insurance. For some the only chance of driving is lessons. In these cases I recommend an intensive course.
So just taking lessons, how many lessons does it take to learn to drive? If you are exceptionally talented 12 hours will do. Then if you are pretty darn good at driving, 24 hours of lessons with no other practice will have you passing the test. However if you are just the average person, you are probably looking at 36 hours of lessons if you can’t practice in another car.
One last thing. The cheapest lessons is not usually the best lessons to take. Time spent with a good instructor will be far more productive than a lesser one.
