How do I Prepare for the Driving Test?
Short answer. Study, pre-tests, then pick a test date.
Longer answer…
So, we are working on the premise that you have completed your Essential Driver Training (EDT) driving lessons. Now you are well along the queue and seriously asking “How do I prepare for the driving test?”
If you have been practicing frequently, you are one step ahead. Start studying the theory questions on this site. As well the road signs. Additionally you can make sure you know the basic parts under the bonnet and the internal controls. These are also in the Lessons and Tests menu at the bottom of the page. Book a pre-test early, just to check what bad habits you need to be fixing. Have a chat with your driving instructor about how many lessons you may take, based on the result of this pre-test. As part of this conversation you can pick a date for the driving test that will allow you to get a final pre-test lesson just a little while before your actual driving test.
If you do not have a car to practice in you should continue getting some driving lessons to maintain your standard of driving. If you don’t do this, the other alternative is to get a batch of lessons around the time that you are getting an invitation to book the driving test. Part of the problem is that the RSA give a limited window for picking test dates. But this can be extended and rolled on. While driving instructors are often booked a long time in advance. So they and their car, may not be available on the time you pick. This is why it is important to talk to your driving instructor before you pick the date.
On the day of the driving test, I recommend that most people do a warm up drive before the test to get themselves in the routine of driving properly and to iron out any remaining issues.
